Video SEO
Video SEO is about making videos discoverable in Google Search, the Videos tab and Discover. Each video needs a dedicated, indexable watch page where it is the main content, supported by VideoObject structured data and a stable thumbnail.
  • Google only shows a video thumbnail in main results when the video is the primary content of the page.
  • Give each important video its own watch page with a unique title and description.
  • Add VideoObject markup with name, description, thumbnailUrl and uploadDate.
  • Provide a transcript. It helps users, search engines and AI systems.
  • Use the Video indexing report in Search Console to see why videos are not indexed.

Video can appear in the main results with a thumbnail, in the Videos tab, in Google Images and in Discover. To be eligible, Google has to find the video, understand it and consider it the point of the page.

The watch page

Since 2023 Google has only shown video thumbnails in main search results for pages where the video is the main content. A video dropped halfway down a blog post as a supplement will not get one. If a video matters, give it a dedicated page:

  • The video is prominent and visible on load, not hidden behind a tab or far down the page.
  • The page has a unique title, heading and description about that video.
  • The page is indexable and performs well enough to rank.
  • The player is not obscured by other elements.

Help Google find the video

  • Embed with standard HTML: video, embed, iframe or object elements.
  • Do not require a click or other user action before the video element loads into the page.
  • Avoid fragment-only URLs for separate videos.
  • Submit a video sitemap, or add video entries to your existing sitemap.

Thumbnails

A video cannot be indexed without a valid thumbnail. Provide one via structured data, a video sitemap or the poster attribute. It should be at least 60 by 30 pixels (much larger is better), in a supported format such as JPG, PNG or WebP, at a stable URL that Googlebot can fetch.

Structured data

 <script type="application/ld+json">
{
  "@context": "https://schema.org",
  "@type": "VideoObject",
  "name": "How canonical tags work",
  "description": "A five minute explanation of canonical tags and when to use them.",
  "thumbnailUrl": "https://www.example.com/video/canonical-thumb.jpg",
  "uploadDate": "2026-10-07T09:00:00+01:00",
  "duration": "PT5M12S",
  "contentUrl": "https://www.example.com/video/canonical.mp4",
  "embedUrl": "https://www.example.com/embed/canonical"
}
</script>
  • name, thumbnailUrl and uploadDate are required.
  • description, duration, contentUrl and embedUrl are recommended. Giving Google access to the actual video file through contentUrl enables features such as previews and key moments.
  • Include a time zone in uploadDate.

Key moments

Key moments let searchers jump to a section of a video. For self-hosted video, mark segments with Clip markup or let Google identify them automatically using SeekToAction. On YouTube, add timestamps and labels in the description.

Self-hosted or YouTube?

  • YouTube brings huge reach and is itself a major search engine. The ranking page will usually be youtube.com, not yours.
  • Self-hosting or a professional video host keeps the visitor on your site and gives you the search listing, but you have to earn the audience.
  • Many brands do both: YouTube for discovery and their own watch pages for visitors with stronger intent. The same video can be indexed on more than one page.

Transcripts and captions

Publish a transcript on the page or provide captions. It makes the content accessible, gives search engines text to work with, and allows the page to rank for what was said, not only the title.

Performance

Video players are heavy. Use a lightweight facade (a thumbnail that loads the real player on click) only if the underlying video element or structured data is still present for Google, and reserve space for the player to avoid layout shift.

Common mistakes

  • Expecting a thumbnail for a video that is secondary to the page content.
  • The same video as the main content on many pages.
  • Thumbnails blocked by robots.txt or served from expiring URLs.
  • Lazy-loaded players that never load for crawlers.
  • Missing or incorrect uploadDate.
  • No transcript.

How to test

  • Video indexing report in Search Console lists pages where a video was found and whether it was indexed, with reasons such as "Video is not the main content of the page".
  • URL Inspection shows video detection for a single page.
  • Rich Results Test validates VideoObject markup.

The GEO angle

YouTube is one of the most cited domains in AI answers, particularly in Google's AI Overviews and AI Mode, and models work from transcripts. Clear spoken explanations, accurate captions, descriptive titles and chapter markers all make a video easier for AI systems to understand and reference. On your own site, the transcript is what makes the video's content retrievable at all.

Add your title here

This is a paragraph. Writing in paragraphs lets visitors find what they are looking for quickly and easily. Make sure the title suits the content of this text.
