- MCP lets an AI assistant call a tool's data directly, so analysis starts from a question, not an export.
- Sitebulb's MCP gives read-only access to your crawl projects and audits.
- Similarweb's MCP exposes traffic, keyword and competitive data, and uses your normal API data credits.
- SISTRIX's MCP covers visibility, rankings, keywords and AI metrics, and any account can connect via OAuth.
- Always check the numbers. The assistant can misread or over-summarise what the tool returns.
The Model Context Protocol (MCP) is an open standard, introduced by Anthropic in November 2024 and since adopted across most major AI assistants, that lets an assistant connect to external tools through a common interface. A tool publishes an MCP server describing what it can do; the assistant reads that list and calls the right functions when you ask a question. Think of it as a universal plug between AI chat and the software you already pay for.
Why it matters for SEO
- Questions, not exports: "Which templates lost the most internal links since last month's crawl?" replaces a VLOOKUP session.
- Joining sources: one conversation can combine crawl data, traffic estimates and visibility trends.
- Speed for routine work: pitch research, audit summaries and competitor snapshots take minutes.
- Repeatable workflows: the same prompt run each month becomes a lightweight report.
Sitebulb
Sitebulb's MCP connects an assistant to your Sitebulb account, on Cloud or Desktop. It is read-only: it can read projects, audits, hints, insights, reports and individual URL data, but it cannot start, stop or change crawls. Desktop only works while Sitebulb is running and signed in on your machine. Claude and ChatGPT are supported, with an authorise-and-sign-in setup.
Good uses: executive summaries of an audit, prioritising hints by template, comparing two audits for what broke, and pulling lost-and-found URLs after a migration.
Similarweb
Similarweb launched its MCP server in September 2025. It exposes traffic and engagement, traffic sources, rankings, audience, keyword and SERP data, app data and, increasingly, AI-related traffic and visibility data. It needs a plan with API access and an API key, and every MCP call uses the same data credits as the API, so broad questions can be expensive.
Good uses: competitor traffic and channel mix, market sizing for a pitch, referral and AI-assistant traffic comparisons, and keyword share of clicks.
SISTRIX
SISTRIX's MCP covers the Visibility Index, keyword rankings, search volumes, backlinks and AI visibility metrics. Since May 2026 any SISTRIX account can connect via OAuth without an API key, and SISTRIX says MCP requests do not use API credits. Claude and ChatGPT are supported.
Good uses: quick visibility checks on a prospect, content gap analysis against competitors, spotting update winners and losers, and tracking how a brand appears in AI answers.
Getting started
- Add the tool as a connector in your assistant (in Claude, via Settings and Connectors) and sign in.
- Name the tool in your prompt at first, for example "Using SISTRIX, compare the visibility of these three domains in the UK."
- Give scope: country, date range, domain or project, and the output you want.
- Ask the assistant to show which tool calls it made, so you can sanity-check the source.
Common mistakes
- Trusting summaries blindly. Spot-check key figures in the tool's own interface.
- Burning credits with open-ended prompts on metered tools such as Similarweb.
- Mixing metrics from different tools as if they were the same measure. Similarweb visits and SISTRIX visibility are not comparable.
- Forgetting data permissions. Connecting client accounts to an AI assistant may need client approval.
- Assuming the assistant can change things. Many SEO MCPs are deliberately read-only.
Security and privacy
- Prefer official servers from the vendor over unofficial community versions.
- Use OAuth where available, and keep API keys out of shared prompts and files.
- Check what each connector can read and write before enabling it for a team.
- Treat data pulled into a chat as you would an export: it is now in that conversation.
The GEO angle
MCP is also how AI assistants increasingly reach live data on behalf of users. The same shift that lets an SEO query Sitebulb in plain language means brands may one day publish their own MCP servers so assistants can query products, prices and availability directly. Understanding the protocol now is useful preparation for that agent-driven web.
